A Description of the Linebacker Position in Football, By Michael Calcagno
In American football, the linebacker is a defensive position that is defined by a player’s ability to hold tough and stand their ground. As the name indicates, a linebacker’s job is to maintain force behind the defensive line. It is often necessary for a linebacker to anticipate the quarterback’s intentions, weave through gaps and put a stop to runs, provide pass coverage, and facilitate communication throughout the defensive line. To qualify as a linebacker, an athlete should be both fast and large and possess the courage to take direct hits.
